Strawberries and Cream Crumble: Dessert Three Ways

  © 2010 Cameron Blazer // Cottage IndustrialistQuick recap: last Sunday was a casserole of fail* on the cooking and crafting front. You may remember that I burned dessert. When you see how easy this dessert is, you will know just how off my game I was.

It's strawberry season here in South Carolina, and this week my son got to go to one of my favorite local farms with his class to pick strawberries. He came home with two pints of lovely, freshly picked, and minimally-smushed-by-and-eager-four-year-old strawberries. And so I set about to redeem myself from last week.

Really Good Stuff I Already Have

I began the year reflecting on my desire to eat more seasonally and more sustainably. And I'm happy to say that we have definitely improved the sourcing and quality of our diet in the last three months. But with the bumper crops of spring approaching, there is a looming challenge I cannot ignore if I am going to keep this up: I am a compulsive, impulsive produce shopper. And thinking seasonally about food has only made that worse, so afraid am I to miss out on a brief growing season or a particularly good harvest. And I'm no good with a grocery list, either. They only work if you look at them, you see.

Calendars: Part Deux

Did you think I would let you down? I promised calendars by the end of February (after hinting they'd be ready by the first week in January. Whatever!). And now, here it is the end of February, and I HAVE CALENDARS! Trust me, no one is more relieved than I.

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit

Ok. So I did a little math. And though February is a shorty of a month, by its end, there will be 50+ extra minutes of daylight per day (at least here at the 32nd Parallel) that we didn't get at the beginning. I think that's pretty good for such a wee little month. We're going to need all that extra sunlight for Spring and Summer's bumper crops. In the meantime, we're still trying to keep it seasonal around my house, and Heather is back at it at Home Ec 101 with a new batch of seasonal recipes featuring some of my favorite cruciferous veggies.

Happy New Year!

I love New Year's Day. New Year's Eve, not so much. But New Year's Day I love. Especially when it falls on a Friday. Other than the long weekend aspect, I love, love, love the food. In South Carolina we traditionally eat pork, collard greens, and peas and rice (or Hoppin' John) on New Year's Day. Like many food cultures, each of these foods symbolizes a hope for the new year—for plentiful food, money, and luck.
